Responding to Mental Health Crisis in Monroe County
We are partnering with Monroe County Office of Mental Health, Liberty Resources and RoCovery Fitness to integrate NYS Certified Peer Specialists into the Forensic Intervention Team (FIT) Program. FIT and law enforcement agencies assist individuals with mental health needs and who have frequent contact with law enforcement.
The goal of the FIT is to de-escalate crisis situations and provide appropriate referrals, when necessary, to offer the least restrictive level of care safely and effectively. This model allows law enforcement agencies and FIT to work together with the common goal of providing the best options for individuals living with mental illness in our communities.
The Peers from Liberty Resources and RoCovery Fitness have lived experiences which helps them relate to, and assist, people in crisis.
Peer will provide follow up support, including referrals to needed resources based upon the needs of the individual. The goal of this intervention is to provide compassionate, responsive care to individuals undergoing crises and divert them from preventable emergency room visits. Peers may also be present at the time of immediate crisis, thus beginning a process of engagement to support post-crisis follow-up.
